Service Description
Needle Felted Wool Landscapes with Jaana Mattson $310/$40 material fee Saturday, April 22, 2023, 10-4 pm Sunday, April 23, 2023, 10-3 pm All levels are welcome in this class, anyone from a hobbyist with a short attention span to a professional artist can learn, have fun and be impressed with what they will accomplish in this workshop. In this 2-day intensive class we begin with the basic elements; different types of wool and techniques for application using landscape photos for inspiration. A simple technique, needle felting is a dry method of creating non-woven fabric by interlocking wisps of dyed wool fiber using a notched needle. The organic textures and impressionistic colors of blended wool offer a very painterly approach to textiles, beautifully suited to landscape. Over the course of the 2-day session we learn with our hands about different types of wool roving and experiment with a variety of needles and needle holders. During the first day of class we will all work from the same images to take a step by step approach as we learn to “build” the landscape from background and shadow to the highlights of the surface. Hand-outs and discussion will help illuminate the basic principles of composition and the use of color and color-theory to produce a dynamic landscape. During Day 2 each student will select their own image from personal or provided photos and work through the idea with guidance from the instructor. The $40 materials fee includes all supplies needed for our workshop which each student will take home, including wool roving, foam block, base felt and needles. Additional felting tools and materials will also be available for use during class time. Classes are held in the fabulous Local Cloth Studios in Asheville's River Arts District at 408 Depot St, Asheville, NC 28801 *Please note: As this is an indoor, group event masks may be required during the workshop, depending on CDC guidelines at the time. Your cooperation is greatly appreciated! There is plenty or parking available in the public lot across the street. For more info about Asheville, NC...
